Overview
Pine bark flavonoid polyphenols were in used by the Native Americans in a tea brewed from the bark of pine trees growing along the Atlantic coast. History indicates that pine bark was used medicinally as early as the 13th century. French explorer Jacques Cartier was introduced to the tea when native americans saved most of his crew from death by scurvy during the winter of 1534. More than 400 years later universities began studies on flavonoids. Their search for bio-active flavonoids eventually led them to French coastal pine bark, where they found a rich source of a narrow group of highly bio-available and bio-active flavonoids in the bark of the French maritime pine of Landes de Gascogne. Pycnogenol is produced by a validated and patented manufacturing process. There are absolutely no pesticides or herbicides used during the growing of the pine trees or toxic solvents used during the manufacture of Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol is made up of a natural occuring blend of bioflavonoids including catechin, epicatechin, taxifolin, oligomeric proanthocyanidnins and phenolic fruit acids such as ferulic acid and caffeic acid. It is a powerful antioxidant that is also rich in compounds known as proanthocyanidins. These constituents are potent free radical scavengers, and are thought to protect the lining of blood vessels from damage. Many other commonly used herbs are high in proanthocyanidins, including grape seed extract, green tea and cranberry.
